Originally named DOMIZIANA and launched in 1979, this ship was built for the Italian company Tirrenia – Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione. For over three decades, DOMIZIANA faithfully served various routes, including the Genoa to Porto Torres route. In 1987-1988, DOMIZIANA underwent a significant transformation at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste, Italy. During this extensive refurbishment, its length increased from 136 to 147.99 meters, enhancing its capacity and capabilities. It then resumed its duties on the Genoa to Porto Torres route, operating there for another fifteen years. Between September 2003 and 2010, DOMIZIANA embarked on a new journey, this time under the Adriatica di Navigazione banner, serving the Bari to Durrës route. In 2010, it briefly plied the waters between Genoa and Olbia before being laid up in Crotone in the same year. In May 2011, the ship found its way into the fleet of Adria Ferries. Following a shipyard stay in Durrës, Albania, it began operating the Bari to Durrës route under the name AF FRANCESCA in July 2011. The vessel underwent further modifications in Tuzla, and it was subsequently reintroduced into ferry service. The AF FRANCESCA boasts impressive specifications, including a length of 147.99 meters, a breadth of 25.4 meters, and a maximum draft of 6.1 meters after its major refurbishment. With a gross registered tonnage (GRT) of 12,575 and two GMT-A420-16V diesel engines generating 19,199 horsepower, it can reach a service speed of 20.5 knots. Accommodating up to 2,000 passengers and 470 vehicles, this ferry is a testament to maritime engineering and adaptability. From its early days as DOMIZIANA to its present role as AF FRANCESCA, this vessel continues to play a vital role in connecting Bari and Durrës, providing reliable service and unforgettable experiences for travelers.
