Video Details • Source Material: Chu Ke Pai An Jing Qi (Slapping the Table in Amazement), Story 1. • Original Title: "The Man of Fortune Meets Good Luck with Dongting Red Oranges; The Persian Merchant Spots the Cracked Crocodile Shell". • Author: Ling Mengchu (Ming Dynasty). • Key Characters: Wen Ruoxu (The "Luckless" Protagonist), Zhang Da (The Expert Trader), Ma Baoha (The Persian Merchant). Main Description 【About This Story】 Is success determined by hard work or destiny? This episode explores a classic Ming Dynasty short story about Wen Ruoxu, a man so unlucky that his neighbors called him the "Fortune Hunter" (or "Luckless Han") because every business he touched failed. Join us as we recount his incredible journey from financial ruin to unimaginable wealth through a series of happy accidents. The Story Breakdown: 1. The Unluckiest Man in Suzhou Wen Ruoxu was a talented scholar and artist, but he had terrible business luck. When he tried to sell high-quality fans in Beijing, it rained all summer, ruining his stock and earning him a reputation as a jinx. Having exhausted his family fortune, he decided to join a group of merchants going overseas to see the world before he died. 2. The One-Tael Investment Penniless, Wen was supported by his friends who pooled together one tael of silver for him. With no better options, he spent the money on "Dongting Red" oranges, a local specialty, intending to just eat them or give them away on the voyage. 3. Oranges Turn to Silver Upon arriving in the Kingdom of Giling, the locals were fascinated by the bright red fruit. Wen discovered that the locals were willing to pay a fortune in silver coins for the oranges, treating the fruit as a rare exotic treasure. He turned his one tael of silver into nearly a thousand silver coins simply because he possessed something the locals had never seen,. 4. The Giant "Useless" Shell On the return journey, a storm forced the ship to dock at a deserted island. While exploring, Wen found a massive shell, as large as a bed, which he dragged back to the ship. While the other merchants mocked him for bringing back "garbage," Wen insisted on keeping it as a curiosity. 5. The Persian Merchant's Secret When the ship docked in Fujian, a wealthy Persian merchant named Ma Baoha immediately recognized the shell's value,. He revealed it was the shell of a "Tuolong" (a mythical giant crocodile/dragon), containing 24 ribs filled with priceless night-shining pearls. The merchant bought the shell for 50,000 taels of silver and a silk shop, making Wen Ruoxu one of the richest men in the region,. 6. The Lesson The story concludes that while Wen was destined for wealth, it required him to step out of his comfort zone to find it. As the poem says: "When luck retreats, gold loses its color; when the time comes, iron shines like light". Don't forget to Like, Subscribe, and hit the Bell Icon for more tales from Chinese folklore!
