Chronicling eight decades of history, Fort Smith National Historic Site in Arkansas goes far back to the 19th Century. The story of the Cherokee Indians migrating to the fertile Arkansas, the land of the Osage Indians, didn't go well with the native inhabitants is intriguing. Ensuing warring disputes led to the US government to built a military post to establish the borders of both these tribes. The site also chronicles the westward expansion and the subsequent role of the fort in it. Two forts were constructed along the winding Arkansas River and now only vestiges remain that give a glimpse of gallantry, battles and social equity. Perched atop a hill and overlooking the meeting point of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers, the area has an alluring natural beauty to it as well.
