Monday, January 6th 1969. Footage of the arrival of Chief Obafemi Awolowo in the United Kingdom for the Commonwealth Prime Ministers Conference at which he was to serve as the representative of Nigeria. The buildup to the conference featured a number of political demonstrations. Chief Awolowo's arrival was greeted by pro-Federal Nigerians who arrived at the airport in 15 coaches. In central London, pro-secessionist protesters demonstrated in support of Biafra. They held placards charging the Nigerian military with genocide as well as others critical of British arms supplies to Nigeria. Anti-Rhodesian protesters held an all-night vigil outside Marlborough House where the meeting was scheduled to take place. They voiced their opposition to white minority rule. Note: Alighting from the plane with Chief Awolowo were Dr. Okoi Arikpo, Nigeria's foreign minister (bespectacled), and the Nigerian High Commissioner in the UK, Brigadier Babafemi Ogundipe (mustachioed).
