The 2019 Lightning North American Championship was a big deal this year with over 70 boats attending! Sailing these boats is a big deal for the people at the Buffalo Canoe Club, so a ton of teams made it out for the event. ALSO, it was the most young people I've seen at a Lightning event (or any One Design event)! After some great performances at top level events throughout the summer we ended up finishing in 25th at this event. Our team had phenomenal boathandling as usual, but we weren't able to perform like we wanted in the race results. Many errors included lack of aggression at the starts, tacking in bad air, and sailing too much in the middle of the course. We had good starts, but they could have been better by fighting for the favored end. We have the boathandling and skills to do it, so no excuses. Also, there's many times where we tacked in spots like they seemed would have clear air, but we didn't anticipate that within a few minutes other boats would be choosing to tack there too. This kept us trapped in the middle of the course as we would tack away to clear our air but by heading back to the middle you eventually get bad air again.
