John and Cindy France were among the first growers in California to go organic when they certified their family farm, France Ranch, in 1989. John says there wasn't much support for organics in those early years. Anything organic growers learned was through experience and guidance from others in the community. In his more than 30 years of farming organic, John says change is a constant you can count on and every year is different. One thing that doesn't change is the fundamental importance of soil nutrition in organic farming. John says, “I want to farm below the soil,” that his focus is creating a balanced ecosystem below ground. “Because ultimately, that’s where virtually all the nutrition for the fruit set comes, the characteristics of the sugar levels, the size, the smoothness of the skin, and the ability for the fruit to handle the rigors of picking and packing, that’s all set in the soil.” In 1998, John and Cindy founded Homegrown Organic Farms to market and sell their organic fruit. They marketed only their farm at the time, and today, the company represents over 100 organic growers in California and Oregon. The company transitioned to an ESOP in 2021, but France Ranch continues to grow organic grapes and citrus for Homegrown.
