Is an abdominoplasty considered major surgery? The answer is it depends. In this video, Doctor Bernard defines the term, “major surgery”. It usually means the major organs (such as the heart, brain, or lungs) are involved. There’s often some time spent in the hospital and downtime to heal. So, does an abdominoplasty meet this criteria? While not technically “major surgery”, an abdominoplasty can be considered a major procedure. Although, this depends on the type of abdominoplasty, since there are many different types of abdominoplasty procedures to help men and women remove loose skin and fat after pregnancy or significant weight loss. First up is a mini abdominoplasty. This is great for mums that have a c-section flap of skin remaining on the lower abdomen after a cesarean section birth. While a mini abdominoplasty can technically be performed with local anesthesia in the doctor’s office, it’s far more comfortable and safe to undergo general anesthesia in an operating room. When it comes to a full abdominoplasty or extended abdominoplasty, it is like major surgery because it involve a large area of skin and tissue, hence it must be performed in a hospital and has a recovery period of a few weeks. Then there is an abdominoplasty with abdominal muscle repair, an abdominoplasty with lipo, a lower body lift, and more. Depending how much skin reduction and liposuction fat removal is involved, some procedures are more “major” than others.
