Friday, April 4 | Lesson 1 FOR STUDY AND MEDITATION: Read the chapter titled "A Significant Prophecy" on pages 317 to 341 of The Great Controversy, by Ellen G. White. “The ministers and the people declared that the prophecies of Daniel and the Apocalypse were incomprehensible mysteries. But Christ had called His disciples' attention to the words of the prophet Daniel concerning the events that were to unfold in their time, and had said to them, ‘Let him who reads understand.’ And the assertion that the Apocalypse is a mystery that cannot be understood is refuted by the very title of the book: ‘The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass. [...] Blessed is he who reads, and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is at hand.’ [...] “In the face of such testimony to Inspiration, how dare men teach that the Apocalypse is a mystery beyond human understanding? It is a revealed mystery, an open book. The study of Revelation directs the mind to the prophecies of Daniel, and both books present instructions of utmost importance, given by God to men, concerning the events that will unfold at the end of this world's history. “Scenes of deep and moving interest concerning the church’s experience were revealed to John. He saw the situation, the dangers, the conflicts, and the final deliverance of God’s people. He records the final messages that are to ripen the earth’s harvest, whether in sheaves for the heavenly granary or in bundles for the fires of destruction. Matters of paramount importance were revealed to him, especially for the latter church, so that those who were turning from error to truth might be instructed concerning the dangers and conflicts that awaited them. No one needs to be in the dark concerning what is to happen on earth” (Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy, pp. 389, 390). DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. How can studying the prophecies increase your faith? What prophecies—some written thousands of years ago about events that would occur centuries or millennia later—have contributed to increasing your trust in the Bible and, more importantly, in the God who inspired it? For example, how does Daniel 2 offer powerful and logical reasons to trust that God exists and knows the future? 2. What are the best ways to protect ourselves from the many wild and speculative attempts to interpret prophecies, sometimes even by people within our church? 3.
