Hartmannsweilerkopf / Hartmannswillerkopf / (Col du) Vieil Armand - Verdun of the Vosges Front Following the German assault route up the southern slope — from the Hirtzenstein through rock bunkers and the Rehfelsen fortresses to the Battlefield on the summit. Between December 1914 and November 1918, approximately 30,000 soldiers were killed fighting for control of Hartmannsweilerkopf. The soldiers called it The Man-Eater. Locals knew it as Bone Hill, or simply the Mountain of Death. The Germans fortified the southern slope with bunkers carved into solid rock, underground galleries, and communication trenches connecting strongpoints like Feste Bamberg and the Rehfelsen positions. The French attacked uphill repeatedly. The frontline barely moved. The mountain kept killing. This first part is more exploratory than my usual videos — walking the terrain, showing the structures as they are, letting the battlefield speak for itself. The southern slope wasn't the main killing ground — that was the summit — but it was the contested approach you had to fight through to reach the battlefield above. From the Hirtzenstein captured in January 1915, through Minenwerfer positions to the rock fortresses that held against French artillery for years. This is the German southern line — where soldiers lived in concrete bunkers with electricity and running water, waiting for orders to assault the summit uphill. Part 1 of 3.
