Suite in D-major (Prelude-Allemande-Courante-Sarabande-Gigue) by Denis and Ennemond Gaultier. From the collection ’La rethorique des Dieux’ (the gods art of speaking) from middle of the 17:th century. The Prelude is written ’non misurato’ which means that no rythm is indicated-it’s all up to the performer to shape the music. The Allemande describes a scene from the Greek Mythology where Phaethon, son of the sun god Helios, borrows his fathers chariot which transports the sun over the sky,but flies much to near the earth and burns the ground creating the big Sahara desert !!! Zeus, the sky and thunder god, gets very angry and decides to kill Phaethon with lightning. This drama starts around 1:52 into the video and is soon over but comes back in the repetition around 2:18. (so he actually gets killed twice in the music) The Courante (from French ’courir’- to run) is played in inégale which gives a bit ’jazzy’ feeling. This manner was very common during the baroque period. The beautiful Sarabande includes some special lute technique for the right hand where you strum the strings up or down with right hand index finger. The Gigue is a lively dance usually in 6/8 but in this period played in 4/4. It originates from the English jig and was imported into France in the middle of the 17:th century. This Gigue was composed by ’vieux Gaultier’ (the old Gaultier),cousin of Denis Gaultier who wrote all the other mouvements in this Suite. If you want to hear this music played on the lute I recommend a wonderful recording by Anthony Bailes called Pièces de Luth. I’ve listened to it many times during almost 50 years and I never get tired of it !
