In this video, I re-record an old song I wrote called "Heart and Soul" through my Otari MX5050mkiii 8-track tape machine, and then into Logic from the playback head. At each step of the way, you hear what I hear through my monitors as I'm recording. This provides a nice "before and after" to compare digital vs. tape, as I'm monitoring digitally through my Apollo 16. One thing I forgot to mention - I sent the entire final mix back through a pair of channels on my Neve 1073OPX to glue it all together. I find that this step really goes a long way if you're mastering digitally. It doesn't even need to be a preamp with lots of color. Even just looping the line outs of your interface to line in's will give things a more uniform quality due to the op-amps in the converters. Reverbs and effects in particular tend to sound separate from everything else if they don't hit some kind of analog-ish stage along with the rest of the mix. You can achieve this with plugins too. A mixbus comp or tape emulator will yield similar results. But in the spirit of chasing an "analog" sound, I chose the out-of-the-box approach. 00:05 - Listen to the full song 04:40 - Introduction 05:44 - Drums 12:12 - Programmed percussion and synths 16:07 - Bass 16:36 - Guitars 23:16 - Vocals 28:51 - Mastering
