As we reflect on the first day of the Special Olympics New Zealand, it’s hard not to smile. Parakiore Sports Centre came alive with first games, first wins, and that mix of nerves, excitement, and pride you could see on every athlete’s face. Courts were buzzing, the pool was roaring, and athletes were soaking up the experience of competing in a world-class facility built for moments just like this. One of the highlights was a special visit from the Crusaders high fives, words of encouragement, and smiles all round. Champions recognising champions. The NOVUS team were there too, cheering from the sidelines and seeing firsthand what community support helps create. Because Day 1 wasn’t just about competition - it was about connection, belonging, and confidence that carries well beyond the scoreboard. A day full of pride, courage, and moments that matter - and the week was only just getting started.
