Today we're going to talk about the differences between the secondary market and traditional it resellers for your supply chain. #1 Where does all this equipment come from? A. Companies decommission equipment and sell it to resellers, recyclers, it, asset disposition companies, and VARs. B. Distributors and resellers resell equipment that's been returned or overstock. D. A CIO can come in with a cloud migration project or a data center move, merger or acquisition, and next to new equipment just gets liquidated. #2 What type of equipment is available. A. Most people think that just parts are available in the secondary market, but you actually can go and buy configured servers, storage & network hardware. Note: But it's important to work with someone who can design solutions based on this equipment - with engineers. B. Servers, storage, network equipment, laptops, all kinds of personal components, parts from HPE, Dell EMC and NetApp and Cisco and Lenovo, and more. Note: OEMS participated too: IBM global finance, Dell finance, HP reman all sell their excess return items, and also just excess inventory out to the secondary market as well. #3 What to know about the secondary market. A. The most important thing is probably the software. Once you get the equipment in your data center, you cannot update the software. Sometimes you can buy equipment that comes with a Smartnet agreement such as Cisco. Note: But that's actually not an issue because if you look at all your infrastructure, a lot of the infrastructure you haven't updated the OS in years. So if you don't need to update the iOS or the operating system and you haven't been doing that, there's no reason to continue to update the software. So you've got to make a decision and figure out is this the right solution for me? B. Parts Brokers vs. Engineering Led Teams: There are resellers on eBay that sell parts and resellers with engineers that design, test, and back their solutions. Make sure you establish a relationship with a reseller, with an engineering team well in advance so that they can start a book, build a relationship with you, understand your infrastructure and understand what you're trying to do. C. Shipping and Availability. -Typically parts can be shipped overnight and systems can ship out same-day to up to seven days. It really depends on the configuration, the complexity of what you're trying to buy. D. Savings that can be yielded from the secondary market. The savings typically range anywhere from 50% to 80% compared to new equipment. Compared to a refresh the savings are up to 95%. #4 Where can the secondary market be a part of your strategy? A. Upgrading End of life (EOL) and EOSL equipment in their infrastructure. A partner can review the bill of materials and identify the parts that could be sourced on the secondary market and blend new and used hardware to bring the cost down. C. Run it by a secondary market player let them tell you what upgrades are available. E. Renting servers, storage, networking for a bridge project. You're moving a data center or you're moving to the cloud and you don't know how long you're going to need either the capacity or the performance to get the job done. -Rent parts or systems to provide you short term bridge capacity. #4 How do I test the waters with the secondary market? A. Start asking before you have a need. B. Review dev, test, QA and dr projects C. Any server, storage or networking project - see what options exist D.
