Fold-And-Cut Flag http://www.jrmf.org/booklets/fold-and... You’ve probably done paper crafts before. This is a paper puzzle — that is, it’s both a puzzle and a craft — a classic fold-and-cut puzzle with a star-spangled twist! In honor of Flag Day on June 14 or Independence Day on July 4, make your own version of a United States flag out of paper. We recommend using tissue paper, since it is thin and hence easy to fold and to cut through multiple layers, and it comes in red, white and blue. According to legend, George Washington asked Betsy Ross to sew a flag with six-pointed stars, thinking that five-pointed stars would be too difficult. But Betsy Ross was an expert fold-and-cut puzzle solver! By folding a piece of fabric, she was able to produce a symmetric five-pointed star with a single cut. Featuring Nancy Blachman, the founder of the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival (https://www.jrmf.org/) and co-author of JRMF Fold-And-Cut Stars (http://www.jrmf.org/booklets/fold-and...) and author of JRMF Fold-and-Cut Challenges (https://www.jrmf.org/booklets/10-fold....
