(open for more info) We had a 4-hour layover in Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse, so we checked it out. This place is strictly a 24/7 work town, so it's not geared for "everyday life," much less for tourists. Security is tight so there is only so much available to unauthorized people--access to the coastline is denied without prior authorization--but it's wild to see a place that's so important in American industry, to see the place made famous by the Ice Road Truckers TV show, and to visit a remote area with such a surreal landscape. I'm a fan of going off the beaten path, seeing life lived outside of homogenization, experiencing places that are otherwise overlooked. At first glance, it's industrial, dirty, and sterile. However, if you pay attention, you'll see some of the beauty of the Northern Slope, and will check your attitude when you meet the tenants. So, while this place is neither glamorous nor touristy--and some will probably wonder, "Why?"--it is a slice of reality that I am still digesting. (I think it was about 38 degrees but it was sunny; in fact, it's 24-hour sunshine, during this part of the year.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Prudhoe Bay oil fields: https://goo.gl/zBFD0t Ice Road Trucker show: https://goo.gl/XgtJNL The general store is about 2 miles away from the airport.
