(8 Dec 2016) An Iraqi man from the outskirts of Mosul returned to his damaged and dilapidated house with his sister-in-law for the first time in two-and-a-half years on Wednesday. Sufian Hares, who has lived with relatives in the nearby town of Shekihan since he left his home, discovered a massive bomb crater in his garden. The explosion also caused extensive damage to his house. Bashiqa, which is around 10 miles (16 kilometres) north-east of Mosul, was retaken from Islamic State militants a month ago. It is now considered secure but most residents have not returned as it was badly damaged in the fighting and essential services are still missing. Seeing the destruction, Hares is not sure if he ever wants to return. The Islamic State group is still in Mosul despite the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga retaking parts of the city in an offensive which is still ongoing.
