Commanders saluting STORYLINE: Members of Iran's paramilitary Basij force held a civil defense exercise and a parade in Tehran on Friday. The Basij is a mobilization force managed by the Revolutionary Guard. Iran mainly deploys the force for civil defense and to suppress domestic unrest. Iranian media said the drill, titled "110,000 Passengers of Quds", was meant to thwart "threats by the enemy" and show the force’s readiness in the face of any "terrorist act." The drill comes amid tensions in the region, and speculations that Iran's nuclear sites might be attacked by Israel, and increased pressure from the U.S. after president-elect Donald Trump takes office. On Wednesday, Iran staged an air defense drill near its Natanz nuclear site. "Our message is that we are here and ready to clean the region from the ominous presence of America the criminal and the Zionist regime," said Gen. Mohammad Reza Naghdi, deputy Revolutionary Guard Commander-in-Chief. He made the remarks during his speech at the parade. "We are ready. Those who are not, must prepare for this. Nations are ready for Jihad to eliminate the Zionist regime," Naghdi added.
