Got a question recently about how to motivate a millennial at work. And it's about understanding what's important to them in the job. So, our tendency would be to say, “Hey, what's important? . . . travel, learning, flexible hours, or pay . . . give a score zero to five.” The problem is, we could score everything five, or everything three or whatever, and it doesn't force a ranking. So, what I like to do is give them cards like this, and say, “Sort these in the order that they're important to you.” And the reason this works and it's better is because it forces a prioritization. So if you're going to your boss and you want clarity, you're trying to provide clarity, think about it in terms of a sorting, not a scoring. I'm David Marquet. That's your Leadership Nudge.
