While these archaeological sites had only been discovered in the 1930s, public access has always been difficult. Compounding the isolation was the impact of the Vietnam War on Laos, also known as the Secret War on Laos. Only in recent years have some of the sites been cleared of land mines and bombs by the non-government organization Mines Advisory Group.
