https://www.arlingtonortho.com/condit... The most common site of arthritis in the foot rests at the base of the big toe. Like other joints, smooth articular cartilage covers the ends of the bone. If the joint in the big toe, known as the metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint, shows damage caused by wear, tear or injury, the raw bone ends can rub together. This can cause the joint to stiffen and make walking painful and difficult. A bone spur may also develop on the top of the bone. This overgrowth can prevent the toe from achieving full range of motion when walking. This can result in a stiff big toe, a condition also known as Hallux Rigidus. When mild or moderate wear results in hallux rigidus, an orthopedic surgeon may recommend a cheilectomy surgery to allow additional room for the toe to bend. Most patients experience long-term relief with this surgery. To perform a cheilectomy, the surgeon makes an incision on the top of the foot, removing the bone spurs as well as a portion of the foot bone. In doing so, the procedure ultimately allows the toe more room to move and bend. To patients, cheilectomy surgeries have a relatively short recovery time. The toe and the operative site may remain swollen for several months after the operation, and patients may have to wear a wooden-soled sandal for at least two weeks following the surgery.
