Tuning: D#-G#-C#-F# Artist: Guns N' Roses Bassist: Duff McKagan Album: Appetite For Destruction (1987) Song: Sweet Child O' Mine Bass: Ibanez SR300EB-WK I've played that over a bassless track, so you are only hearing my bass in this video. Guns N' Roses was the first rock band that got me interested in music and playing an instrument. I thought it was incredible what that combination of bad attitude and sensitivity could do. I was 13, and Appetite for Destruction blew my mind. Obviously, Slash and Axl were the ones who caught my attention initially. As time went on, I became more interested in the work of Duff McKagan, the bassist. That Fender Jazz Bass sound is iconic, and his playing is very rhythmic on the drums and melodic on the vocals at the same time. I've tried to emulate that sound with a bit of EQ, pickup selection and a bit of chorus. The song itself isn't complicated, a simple D progression with a change to Em. The difficulty with this song is keeping the beat steady with the kick, ghost notes with the snare, and the arrangements. Because it's so simple, it lends itself well to these types of fills, and Duff uses a lot. It takes a bit of learning where they all go and their variations, but with practice, anything is possible.
