When WW Il broke out in 1939, Cardiff found itself having to prepare for air-raids. Between 1940 and March 1944 approximately 2,100 bombs fell here, killing 355 people. John Crichton Stuart the 4th Marquess of Bute , who was the owner of Cardiff Castle at the time, was approached and asked if the strong perimeter walls could be used as bomb shelters. Bute agreed. And so, Ingeniously, the castle's exterior walls were modified to include entrances to these shelters, allowing for quick and safe access for thousands of civilians seeking refuge from the aerial onslaught.
