LiveConnections presents the Daedalus Quartet and legendary bassist John Patittuci. For this program, LiveConnections commissioned John Patitucci to write a new piece for himself and the Quartet, and of course John took it one step further: he wrote two pieces. “Snapshot” and “Paintings in the Now” fuse jazz and classical music, balancing fluidity and form. In his composing, John channels Miles Davis’ instructions to Wayne Shorter: “Make sure you put a window in the music”—creating spaces for improvisation within the structure. The Quartet’s selection of movements by Janáček and Tchaikovsky highlights another sort of “window.” The two composers were contemporaries, working at a time when Romanticism blurred into Impressionism, and folk music became part of concert music.
