Before the U.S. entered World War I, a group of daring Americans joined the French in the skies over Europe. Formed on April 20, 1916, the Lafayette Escadrille was a squadron of American volunteer pilots who flew for France in fierce battles like Verdun and the Somme. They became known for their bold tactics and fearless spirit. Just 38 men served in the Escadrille itself, but over 200 Americans flew with the French during the war. These volunteers came from all walks of life—athletes, writers, lawyers.
