ESPERANZA (HOPE) AS A CULTURE OF HEALTH EQUITY: AN INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY-UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIP FOR SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITY-ENGAGED PSYCHOLOGY TRAINING Presenters: Evelyn Cruz, Director of Program Planning and Evaluation at Centro Hispano Karen Menendez-Coller, Executive Director at Centro Hispano Gabriella Gaus Hinojosa, PhD student in Counseling Psychology Alyssa Ramírez Stege, Clinical Assistant Professor in Counseling Psychology Natalie Rivera.PhD student in Counseling Psychology Sara Sanchez Santana, Social Media Coordinator at Centro Hispano Steve Quintana, Professor in Counseling Psychology Presenters will review the development of “Esperanza, nuestra cultura de salud” (which translates to “Hope, our culture of health”), a community-university partnership between Centro Hispano of Dane County and the University of WisconsinMadison that aims to address social determinants of health (SDoH; Healthy People, 2020), conditions in which the Latine community lives, works, and plays, by adopting a social-ecological approach to programming and services. Esperanza nurtures and grows Latine community strengths by (1) increasing access to culturally- and linguistically-appropriate mental health services through a bilingual graduate training certificate; and (2) strengthening family-centered community programming that addresses the social determinants of health and promotes health equity. Presenters will discuss the challenges and opportunities for sustainable development and growth of this partnership that centers liberatory, anti-racist, and decolonial approaches. Presenters will provide a call to action and guidelines for university leadership and partners to support and enact the Wisconsin Idea in practice to galvanize transformative healing, wellness and health. among formerly incarcerated people.
