With the growing tech presence fanning the flames of the housing crisis, how can there be development without displacement in Oakland? What do Oakland’s histories of displacement, resistance, and change-making reveal about the path to a just future? And what does an ideal future look like for Oakland? Through community interviews, personal stories, original music, and physical exploration―and a deep dive into Oakland’s past―The Bonfire Makers imagined what the future of Oakland could look like if we disrupt current cycles of oppression. By juxtaposing past and future, we explored what "development," "urban renewal," and "health" have meant, do mean, and could mean and illuminate the concrete steps that can be taken to make a just future for all of Oakland a reality. PLACE to LAND (an Oakland love story)―invited people who care about Oakland to dream big, see that the changes we long to see are wholly possible, and take action. Each performance was followed by a community dialogue with audience members (one evening featured a panel discussion with longtime residents, organizers, and others on the front lines of policy advocacy). Select performances raised money for grassroots racial and economic justice organizations working hard for Oakland everyday, including our community partner Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, a member-based organization that fights to end displacement in Oakland. Excerpt performed at the Life is Living Festival in 2016 in Oakland, California.
