Editor's note: A line in our story originally read that the last King to have a coronation was King Charles V. The last King's coronation was actually for King George VI. King Charles III was crowned in a sumptuous, seamless ceremony on Saturday at Westminster Abbey. A fusion of medieval and modern. Queen Camilla was crowned too – in the same Abbey where coronations have taken place since 1066. A diverse range of more than 2,000 guests from celebrities to presidents to volunteers and community workers. Canada’s prime minister was there too while astronaut Jeremy Hansen led the Canadian procession. Dawna Friesen has more. While it rained pretty much most of the day, it didn’t change anyone’s expectations of the day. Everyone was pretty much out there hoping to make some memories. Crystal Goomansingh spoke with some of those in the crowds outside where it was a bonding moment for many. In Alberta, wildfires are continuing to force thousands of people from their homes. More than 24,000 people have had to evacuate across that province while 5,000 more have been told to leave at a moment’s notice. There are more than 100 active wildfires in Alberta right now. Neetu Garcha reports. Before today’s coronation, King Charles III was both the oldest and longest-serving heir apparent in British history. He held the title of Prince of Wales since 1958 and he inherited the title of Duke of Edinburgh when his father Prince Philip died in 2021. Eric Sorensen looks back at the King’s long road to the throne. For many Indigenous people in Canada, trying to deepen ties with the Monarchy is complicated given the history of colonialism. But some leaders like Perry Bellegarde believe King Charles III plays a vital role in the progress of reconciliation. The former national chief of the Assembly of First Nations joins Dawna Friesen in London. It’s now official, Charles is King and his reign begins in earnest. His mother was a hard act to follow and his biggest challenge is remaining relevant at a time when interest in the monarchy, especially with young people, is waning.
