A legendary Notre Dame Football coach has died. The family of Lou Holtz released a statement saying he passed away at the age of 89 in Orlando. Holtz coaching career spanned five decades. Holtz became a beloved member of the Notre Dame community. He started his head coaching campaign with the fighting Irish in 1986 and led the team to a National Championship in 1988. Lou Holtz spent 11 seasons as the head football coach at Notre Dame. But upon physically leaving that post in 1996, his heart, never left Notre Dame. Holtz is still the third winning coach at Notre Dame. There are services planned, including a Mass of Christian Burial at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame. Those details are being finalized and will be released later. Holtz was preceded in death by his wife, Beth. He was surrounded by family when he died.
