Grenadine and the Shirley Temple | Mike's Hard Reviews

As common as it may be, the average person knows little of the origin and uses of grenadine, and in many cases even what the word truly means. In another dry episode of Mike's Hard Reviews, we break down what grenadine truly is, where it comes from, how it came to America, and some of its many uses, both boozy and not. Just like the Naked Gun line, Don't Call Me Shirley! Don't Call Me Shirley: 1 1/2 oz Homemade Grenadine 1/2 oz Lemon Juice 1/2 oz Lime Juice Club Soda, to Top [NOTE: I substituted this for a spicy ginger beer to harken to the original Shirley Temple mocktail.] Method: Combine grenadine, lime juice, and lemon juice into a chilled highball glass. Pour in a small amount of your chosen lengthener and stir to combine. Add ice and top with lengthener. Garnish with two cocktail cherries. Homemade Grenadine: 2 cups Sugar 1 cup 100% Pomegranate Juice 3 dashes Bitters (Optional) [NOTE: You can substitute this with a single drop of orange blossom water if you wish.] Method: Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and stir to roughly combine. Cover and bring up to a gentle simmer over low heat. Cook until sugar dissolves completely and bottle. Keeps for at least 1 month.
