Almost every supermarket now includes an indoor food court filled with fried snacks, sugary drinks, pastries, and processed meals. Even when we go to buy household items, we end up surrounded by fast foods we never planned to eat. On top of that, every busy town—from Colombo to Anuradhapura—has street vendors selling kottu, rolls, naans, burgers, bubble tea, cheese-loaded snacks, and deep-fried items. Office workers, school children, and even travellers are constantly exposed to these high-calorie, low-nutrient foods. Because of this constant availability and visibility, many people eat even when they have no hunger. This drives overeating, weight gain, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, fatty liver, and cholesterol problems—now common among Sri Lankans. In this video, Nutritionist Hiroshan Jayaranga explains how the modern Sri Lankan food environment is silently pushing us toward unhealthy habits, how supermarkets and food stalls influence our decisions, and what you can do to protect your health and make mindful food choices.
