On 19 July 1991, precisely one month before the so-called August Coup attempted to remove Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev from power, the last leader of the USSR gave an exclusive interview to ITN's Jon Snow. Gorbachev was interviewed in London, having attended that year’s G7 Summit hosted in the UK capital. Gorbachev told Jon Snow that his meeting with G7 leaders was historic and a landmark. Indeed, the reforms Gorbachev had introduced to the Soviet Union both at home and in its approach to international relations were seismic. When asked by Snow about the policy of perestroika (“restructuring”) and some of the unintended economic consequences of its implementation, Gorbachev insisted he had no regrets. “With hindsight… I can see even clearer how much it was needed, and how clearly it should have been started 10, maybe 20 years ago, if not before,” the Soviet leader said. There were, however, those within the Soviet Union who were unhappy with Gorbachev’s programme of radical reform. The political liberalisation that accompanied the opening-up of the economy seemed to threaten the very existence of the USSR, with free elections having brought non-Communists to power in a number of Soviet republics. What’s more, Gorbachev sought to devolve power from the central Soviet government to the 15 republics that made up the Soviet Union. A month after the Soviet leader was interviewed in London, hardline members of the Soviet Communist Party attempted a coup d'état to remove him from power. The attempt collapsed within 48 hours, owing to spontaneous civilian opposition on the streets of Moscow together with the effective opposition of Boris Yeltsin, who had recently been elected President of the Russian Soviet Republic. But while Gorbachev survived the coup attempt in the immediate term, the events of 19–22 August 1991 proved fatal to his power and to the Soviet Union as a whole. Gorbachev was discredited by the coup and sidelined by Yeltsin in its aftermath. In December that year, amidst growing chaos in government and on the streets, Gorbachev resigned from post, the Soviet Communist Party collapsed, and the Soviet Union was dissolved. #Russia #SovietUnion #USSR #ColdWar #Communism #Collapse #Coup #CoupDEtat #London #UK #G7 #WorldPolitics #WorldHistory #Wagner #Putin #VladimirPutin #MikhailGorbachev #Gorbachev #Rostov #RostovOnDon #History #Interview #WorldLeaders #Politics #PoliticalHistory To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/videos/...
