This PBS program, produced in the summer of 1999 by Ellen Robertson Neal and edited by Buddy Squyres, celebrates the life and legacy of renowned cowboy poet Buck Ramsey. The documentary features Ramsey reading from his beloved poem Anthem, alongside appearances by Cowboy Entertainer Michael Martin Murphey, cowboy poet JB Allen, and Cowboy Entertainer Red Steagall. Often regarded as the keeper of the flame of cowboy poetry, Ramsey grew up in the Texas Panhandle and worked as a cowboy until age twenty-five. As he would later say, a “sorry, no good horse named Cinnamon came undone,” leaving him paralyzed. He used a wheelchair the rest of his life. Yet from that hardship emerged one of the most powerful voices of the modern cowboy renaissance. Through his poems and songs, Ramsey brought the spirit of the cowboy—wild, free, and fiercely independent—to audiences everywhere. His poem Anthem is widely considered the finest single piece of literature to emerge from the cowboy renaissance.
