Sycharth is located just under two miles south of the village of Llansilin and a mile and a half from the English Border, it is in the territory where North Wales and Mid Wales meet a beautiful part of the world. Today Sycharth is in the county of Powys ( the old county of Montgomeryshire ) however historically it was very much part of the old county of Denbighshire, on that point alone one could claim it to be located in North Wales. This was the seat of the great Welsh nobleman and Prince Owain Glyn Dwr, it was here at Sycharth Owain entertained in great splendour visitors to his court, many nobles foreign dignitaries and poets were guests of Owain however one poet in particular became a great favourite of Owain, his name was Iolo Goch. Iolo Goch was without doubt one of the great poets and writers of his time, indeed one might say of all time. Towards the end of the fourteenth century Iolo Goch wrote a poem that certainly reflects the idyllic life within the court of Owain Glyn Dwr at Sycharth, and indeed within Owain's Realm. A few years later Owain proclaimed himself Prince of Wales, this ignited a revolt across Wales which led to the establishment of an independent Welsh state for a short period. In May 1403 while Owain and his army were away in South Wales, the young Prince Henry later Henry V came to Llansilin and then burnt Sycharth and many of the farms and homesteads around the parish to the ground.
