Experienced organic grower Sara Matheson loves Herbi SOIL - Living Soil Growing Mix, saying it makes growing healthier and easier, saving her time and money. “I won’t use anything else now,” says Sara, an Oakura-based horticulturist. She started Oakura Organics 13 years ago, supplying organic seedlings at the end of her driveway to local customers. The business quickly grew with a range of organic seedlings and seasonal seedling boxes, which she sells through her online shop to hundreds of customers around Taranaki. In spring 2022 she replaced mainstream organic potting mix and seedling mix with Herbi SOIL - Living Soil Growing Mix. The change to Herbi SOIL has made a big difference to the health of seedlings, says Sara, saving her time and money too. With Herbi SOIL, Sara says she can use the same soil from seed to sale, without needing to replace the soil throughout the entire growing period, unlike other mainstream organic soils, which she needed to replace 2-3 times before a seedling was ready for sale. “It’s awesome stuff. It gives me the healthiest, greenest, lush seedlings.” “Normally I would have to change other organic soils several times because the leaves start to droop or turn yellow. The seedling needs more nutrients, but I don’t have that problem anymore. Herbi SOIL gives me more consistent, healthy growth, saving me time and money. I won’t use anything else now.” Sara is already busy this Autumn delivering a variety of Autumn and Winter vegetable seedlings to home growers, offering free delivery in New Plymouth, Bell Block, Okato and Oakura. Each seedling box is selected to suit individual customers, packed with instructions, and includes membership to Oakura Organics private online gardening support group where Sara provides help for customers throughout the growing period. Orders have increased by 15-20% in the past 18 months, says Sara. “There’s new interest from a range of customers including young professionals who want to grow their own organic produce at home for the first time, to elderly customers looking to save money,” she says. “There’s also increased orders from more experienced growers who look for quality, organic seedlings.” Sara first started Oakura Organics because she wanted to provide spray-free, organic food for her young children, and 13 years later it’s still one of her main drivers today. “There are so many chemicals and harmful toxins we’re unknowingly putting into our bodies these days,” she says. Sara’s 40-square-metre backyard is like a growing oasis with several raised garden beds, a berry patch, multiple pots with healthy veggie plants, and two greenhouses. “I love growing as much organic food as possible, as healthy as possible, and utilising whatever space as you’ve got to achieve that,” she says.
