Sorry the title is off a year. I David Vande Berg of Sioux Center, IA Kelly Jongerious of Sheldon, IA and Dick Vogel of Sheldon, IA all participated in this event. This was the 2nd year for the "Snow Cross" at Alexandria MN. The previous year it was only open to factory representatives being won by Larry Coltom on an Arctic Cat. This was the first year that anyone outside of factory driver could enter. I rode a 3 cylinder 500 cc Polaris Indy. My friends from Sheldon both drove Yamaha SRXs. All the other Polaris machines were 340 Indy models. This was the first race the liquid cooled brakes were introduced by Polaris being installed on my sled after the first qualifying session where my brakes boiled in 5 laps. Seriously, many thanks to Ray Monsurd, Dennis Saborn, and Greg Hedlund and Polaris for their factory help. Not knowing anything about Snow Cross and based on the what turned out to be poor advice from Polaris we tied the front suspensions down with chains to limit the travel and help corner on the ice track. This cause terrible damage to the suspension from the jumps during this qualifying. You will also see Gerard Karpik and Brad Hulings on special prototype Ski Doo factory racers. This was a full blown Ski Doo factory assult on independent racers that were competing in this event. Ski Doo used this opportunity to build two prototypes using all the factory might and then market the winning for next years production sleds. The controversy cause a delay in the racing as we tried to get the factory Ski Doo machines thrown out by a boycott that fell apart after a few hours. It was very unfair, but hey what in racing is fair anyway. In the end Karpik's prototype broke down and Brad Hulings won the event on his winning a new Chevy pickup and Meyer snowplow while I finished 5th won $ 400.00 and about broke my 500 Indy machine in two. I barely finished the final with the skis tipped out so badly the machine would snap over steer instantly upon corner entry with motor mounts bent so badly that when I turned right the steering arms would pick the exhaust off the Y pipe with only the springs pulling the exhaust back into position to allow me to go again. Incredible experience racing against the best snowmobile racers in the world. Many thanks to Greg Hedlund of Polaris who helped me piece my sled back together the night before the final and talked me into taking it easy in the race knowing my sled would fail if I didn't. If only we had not tied the suspensions down I believe I could have finished 2nd and not had to re-weld the bulkhead, straighten the engine mounts, re fiberglass the hood, and replace the steering frog etc. when I got home.
