The sources survey the life and activity of Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Yehuda Leib Diskin, known as the “Maharil” or the “Rabbi of Brisk,” who was among the most prominent conservative leaders in Jerusalem in the nineteenth century. The texts describe his extraordinary Torah genius and his uncompromising stance toward wealthy individuals and proponents of the Haskalah in Lithuania—traits that led to his frequent wanderings and even to his imprisonment in Brisk following an informant’s denunciation. After his immigration to the Land of Israel in 1877, he established himself as a central figure within the Old Yishuv and founded significant institutions such as the “Ohel Moshe” yeshiva and the Diskin Orphanage, intended to protect Jewish children from missionary influence. The sources emphasize the considerable influence of his wife, Rebbetzin Sarah Sonia, on the management of public affairs and the operation of his charitable institutions. In addition, the sources detail the ideological struggles he waged against more moderate currents and his stringent halakhic rulings, which to this day constitute a foundational basis for the zealot stream in Jerusalem. Finally, the sources address the modern transformations of the orphanage and its evolution into a trust that currently funds ultra-Orthodox educational institutions.
