Érd Citizens’ Assembly – The thoughts and feelings of participants - with English subtitles

In June 2022, 50 residents of Érd who had been selected using sortition got together in the garden of The Érdi Vígadó to discuss how Érd could be transformed from a suburb into a vibrant city. One that is more involved with the local communities, greener and better to live in. This was the city’s first citizens’ assembly. Citizens’ assemblies in Hungary are still rather new but they have proven in many countries to be a highly effective tool for engaging citizens in public affairs and the decision making process. The 50 members of the Érd Citizens’ Assembly were representative of the adult population of the city in terms of gender, age, level of education and the city districts. The members – with the help of experts – deliberated over the course of two weekends and in the end presented the leaders of the city with a list of 7 recommendations. The event had been hosted by the Municipality of Érd and DemNet Foundation, an independent NGO, was responsible for organizing it.
