Arizona DIY public land archery elk, a hunt that I’ve been dreaming of for years. I feel beyond blessed to have this tag and share this hunt with one of my very best friends. A true backcountry dream bull, deep in the wild rugged desert. 3 and a half days of battling intense hunting pressure led us to a long 6 mile hike to the top of a mountain in hopes of finding a big bull and escaping the pressure. The terrain was steep and gnarly, rugged avalanche chutes exposed open faces between burnt pines where lush green grass grew. The winds howled strong, over 50mph gusting hard from the south. With anticipation high, we called and glassed, searching for elk before darkness fell on day 4. With only 30 minutes left of legal shooting light, Josh spotted 2 cows and a bull feeding in one of the avalanche chutes nearly a mile away, we knew time was limited, but we had to try. Tearing through the rocky steep hillside running after these elk, our hearts beat fast, not only from the high elevation, but because we knew an opportunity could be near. Bugles rang out as we closed the distance, we knew the bull was close, and with only 10 minutes left of light, the time was now. I crept forward to the edge of a small slope anticipating a shot at the bugling bull when antler tines appeared directly in front of me, another bull was closer than expected. Josh cow called and rolled a rock down the hill to simulate a lone cow searching for the herd, I drew back and the bull was fooled as the deafening ring of his bugle rang out just 15 yards ahead. A few more steps and he stood broadside in an opening at 14 yards, a shot opportunity that I’ve been dreaming of and working toward for years, the arrow zipped through and continued its path down the mountain, in an instant, the bull fell and a deep sense of gratitude fell over our hearts. The mission was complete, an incredible experience neither of us will ever forget. The long steep push to get into elk country was tougher than anything I’ve experienced while hunting. Many hard miles resulted in sore feet and stiff backs, but the end result was worth it. We didn’t know if the final push before darkness would be worth the effort, but we knew if we didn’t try, we would regret it. The good Lord blessed us with a spectacular hunt in a state that is known for world-class elk hunting, and that’s exactly what this experience was, world-class. The deep sense of appreciation and gratitude I feel toward these majestic animals is second to none, the places they live and their resilience to weather, predators, and steep terrain is remarkable to witness. I’m unbelievably grateful for this amazing experience in God’s unfathomable creation, and thankful for Josh’s encouragement to keep pushing even when it hurts, his calling to bring the bull in close, and the amazing photos and videos captured on the hunt. Elk hunting consumes my thoughts year-round, and this hunt was better than I ever imagined. Truly thankful and blessed.
