Osama bin Laden, born into a wealthy Saudi family in 1957, became radicalized through his exposure to pan-Islamist ideologies, particularly those of Sayyid Qutb. After supporting the mujahideen against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s, he founded Al-Qaeda in 1988, aiming to wage global jihad against non-Muslim influence, especially the United States. His outrage over the US military presence in Saudi Arabia following the 1990 Gulf War solidified his anti-American stance, leading to his expulsion from Saudi Arabia and subsequent declarations of war. Al-Qaeda, under his leadership, carried out numerous terrorist attacks, culminating in the devastating 9/11 attacks on the United States. Bin Laden evaded capture for nearly a decade, hiding in Pakistan, until he was killed by US Navy SEALs in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011. Welcome to The World History Channel.
