It is definitely useful in certain situations. If the artist has tried their best 100% and then also wants to see if the engineer can squeeze more from the song, then great. If the artist doesn't know how to reach a high standard that they are looking for then great, it's very useful then. The problem occurs somewhere in the middle when it becomes a way to procrastinate on creative decisions or shake off responsibility of tone and decisiveness in the feeling of the music, and assume that someone else knows your song better than yourself.
