#uruguay Uruguay is a small country shares borders whit Brazil and Argentina. It been overshadowed by its larger neighbors for the past two century. Now it’s growing becoming a progressive, stable, safe, and culturally sophisticated nation. You will love learning about this country. Uruguay is the only country in South America situated entirely south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Montevideo is the southernmost capital city in the Americas, and the third most southerly in the world (only Canberra and Wellington are further south). Flag Uruguay’s flag features nine horizontal stripes of white and blue. The canton features the Sun of May. Code of Arms Uruguayan Shield is divided into four quarters of blue and silver. It depict the scales, the hill with the lighthouse, horse and the bull. The sun of may on top and it is surrounded by olive branches. Geography Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America, after Suriname. The landscape features mostly rolling plains and low hill with fertile coastal lowland. Three river system drains the land, Río de la Plata, Uruguay River and the Río Negro. The major internal river is the Río Negro. The narrow Atlantic coastal plain is sandy and marshy, broken by shallow lagoons The highest point in the country is the Cerro Catedral, and it’s peak reaches 514m above sea level. There are ten national parks in Uruguay: Five in the wetland areas of the east, three in the central hill country, and one in the west along the Rio Uruguay. Uruguay enjoys a relatively uniform climate and the country is located entirely within the temperate zone. In Uruguay, seasonal variations are pronounced. spring is usually damp, cool, and windy; summers are warm; autumns are mild; and winters are chilly and damp. History Uruguay was originally inhabited by the Charua, Chaná and Guaraní people- The Portuguese were the first Europeans to visit Spanish established the first permanent settlement in 1624 Montevideo was established as the military base in the early 18th century. In the early 19th century, the British seize Montevideo Jose Gervasio Artigas launched a revolt against Spain and became the country's national hero and declared independence from Spain on 18 May 1811. However, it was soon annexed by Brazil. After several revolts, 1825 Joined Argentina. Finally in 1828, the Treaty of Montevideo declared Uruguay as an independent nation Since its independence, Uruguay had been ravaged by intermittent struggles between the Colorado, and Blanco The Colorados ruled from 1865 to 1958 despite internal conflicts, conflicts with neighboring countries, political and economic fluctuations, and mass immigration from Europe. During the Second World War and the Korean War, Uruguay economy grew and reached the highest per capita income in Latin America. However, in the lats 50’s, Uruguayans economy collapsed and standard of living went down, which led to military and labor unrest. In 1985 Military government return the country to constitutional government in exchange for amnesty to members of the armed forces accused of human rights violations during years of dictatorship. Uruguayans are electing their president since 1994.Uraguyan government has taken actions to reform economic policies, electoral system, social security, education, and public safety. People and Culture Uruguay’s population is around 3.5 million. Most of the population is European descent mostly from Spain and Italy. African decent makeup less then 5% of the population. Indigenous population is little over 2%. There is also a rather large Japanese communities of closer to 600,000 people live in Uruguay. Approximately half of the population is Christians, the other half profess no religion. Spanish is the official language and spoken by almost all of the population. Uruguayan value education, Secondary school students consistently ranks high on standardized tests Music and dance play a significant role in Uruguayan’s culture. Tango is very popular. The candombe is a folk dance is popular in Carnivals. Uruguayan food comes mostly from the European. Asado is the quintessential Uruguayan food. Capeletis a la caruso is considered Uruguayan pasta. Popular desert is Arroz con Leche Football is the most popular sport. Economy Uruguay's economy is a developing economy with the GDP (PPP) of 80 billion. Uruguay’s economic freedom score is 70.0, making its economy the 34th freest in the 2022 Index, ranked 5th among 32 countries in the Americas. The world bank says Uruguay stands out in Latin America for being an egalitarian society and for its high income per capita, low level of inequality and poverty and the almost complete absence of extreme poverty.
