On the NETEC Situation Report for September 4, 2025, Dr. Gavin Harris, a NETEC expert and infectious diseases and critical care physician at @emoryuniversity, shares three things you should know about the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo. First, the outbreak is occurring in the central province of Kasai, affecting Bulape and Mweka health zones. As of September 4, 28 suspect cases and 15 deaths have been reported, including four healthcare workers. Rapid response teams, including WHO experts, are already on the ground, and supplies like PPE and mobile labs are being delivered. Second, this outbreak is caused by Ebola Zaire, the same species responsible for the 2014 West African outbreak. Unlike then, there are now licensed vaccines and therapeutic medical countermeasures available. The DRC has 2,000 vaccine doses prepositioned to protect contacts and frontline workers. Finally, the current threat to the U.S. remains low. There are no direct flights from Kasai to the U.S., and no U.S. government workers are in the area. But healthcare workers should stay alert and follow the identify–isolate–inform protocol when evaluating patients. For more healthcare-related resources and guidance, visit us on the web at netec.org.
