The Role of Women in the Arab Spring (Hind Khoury)

Identifying the unique position of women within Middle Eastern society, Hind Khoury outlined the effect of the Arab Spring on women. From the low proportion of national employment figures represented by women to the unflinching responsibilities owed to family and tribe, social and economic instability resultant from the political uprisings taking place all over the Middle East place further pressures on Arab women. Khoury suggests that grass-roots programs and empowerment of women through the political process will be required in order to prevent the rise of extremism in an Arab world suddenly characterized by political power vacuums. Her outlook is hopeful however, as she perceives economic independence as the route to success and empowerment.
