Peter’s Story is a therapeutic story that accompanies the Lexipontix therapy programme for school-age children who stutter. Peter, the young hero of the story, after a visit to the orthodontist, is told that he needs to wear an orthodontic appliance (a brace). He really does not like the idea of the brace and reacts negatively, fearing that others will make fun of him. His mother, seeing Peter’s reaction, has her own negative thoughts and looks for an appropriate way to approach the situation. In the end, with his mother’s support, Peter manages his thoughts and fears, seeks out and discovers solutions to the problem that concerns him. The children at school applaud Peter when he decides to give a presentation in class about the orthodontic appliance. Peter’s Story, as part of the therapeutic programme, serves specific goals in the therapy of the child who stutters and of the family participating in the Lexipontix programme, under the guidance of a speech and language therapist trained in the programme. As a therapeutic story, Peter’s Story is addressed to all children and families, since wearing a brace or stuttering are not the only challenges they may be called upon to manage.
