Various of fake guns on display before they were destroyed STORYLINE: Thousands of toy guns that look very similar to real weapons were destroyed and trashed in Mexico City on Friday. Authorities got rid of seven-thousand fake pistols and rifles because of their widespread use in crimes. The toy guns are manufactured in such a way that it's difficult to tell whether or not they are real. Authorities said the destruction of the fake weapons was an effort to prevent violence. Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said at least three out of 10 crimes committed in the city were carried out using fake weapons. The toy guns were seized from commercial establishments in Mexico City and the neighbouring state of Mexico as part of an ongoing operation. In Mexico, there is a law governing the manufacture and marketing of toys that are similar to real firearms which calls for the use of transparent plastic or fluorescent colours to make toy guns. The colours gray, silver and black are prohibited. The size of the toy guns must also be different from real weapons to avoid confusion. Authorities also said the recent mass shooting at a US elementary school in Connecticut was a factor influencing their efforts to destroy the fake toy guns. Mexican authorities are carrying out an ongoing operation to confiscate realistic toy guns, but particular attention is given to the problem during the holiday season when families are buying toys. The destruction of the fake guns took place days before Mexican families celebrate Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, on 6 January, when families traditionally give their children presents.
