Check out my website! - http://www.sirenarchive.org/ Originally uploaded January 2nd, 2021. The siren system was removed in favor of cellular, radio and other local alert methods. I have adored this video ever since I first uploaded it simply for the fact that sirens are audible winding down for about a solid minute after the siren shuts off, with the furthest audible being 11-12 miles distant. I'm reuploading it with some added visuals during the wind downs to give an idea of just how far off the sirens are being heard, plus I wanted to amplify the audio during that same period so it was easier to hear the sirens. For reference, the big yellow circle in the photo is 20 miles in diameter. This was likely my favorite siren system to have ever see in person, having gotten video of numerous tests of it before the sirens were shut down for good immediately following this test. In the years since, the sirens were slowly removed, with many of the controllers and heads being either put up elsewhere or sold to enthusiasts. On this day, I was originally planning on going to a test in LaPorte County, Indiana. But shortly before leaving, I got a text from a few friends that Cook had pulled the plug on their sirens and would be running the final test that day. My mom and I immediately got in the car and high tailed it to Three Oaks to the only siren we'd make it to in time for the test. Of the roughly 70 sirens that were active the day this video was taken, only two are known to remain today. Those two both stand at Warren Dunes State Park near Sawyer, where they're used as PAs for the park.
