https://ArlingtonOrtho.com Chondroplasty: an arthroscopic outpatient procedure used to repair a small area of damaged cartilage in the knee. Physicians remove the damaged tissue, allowing healthy cartilage to grow in its place. Chondroplasty is an only an option in cases of mild to moderate cartilage wear. The Doctor performs the procedure through several small incisions on the sides of the knee with the aid of a small video camera called an arthroscope. The arthroscope sends the image to a television monitor, where the surgeon can see the structures of the knee in much greater detail. During a chondroplasty, the surgeon trims and smooths roughened arthritic joint surfaces, allowing the biological functions of the body to come in and finish repairing the damaged areas. Experts consider the recovery time for arthroscopic chondroplasty much faster than traditional open knee surgery. Most patients need crutches or other assistance after arthroscopic surgery. The surgeon will tell patients when they can feel safe putting weight on their foot and leg. Typically, patients can drive again one to three weeks after the procedure.
