SOUNDBITE (English) Aviv Eisenband, Agronomist : "We have to climb up by ourselves and we're not able to use cranes or other machinery because we are working in our forests. So the conditions are very diverse, I mean you have high slopes and rocks and also those machines cannot go in. So, when we locate a very unique tree that we want to continue with him in order to and produce new and better forests, we need to go to the tree and climb up. And climb up because the good cones that contain the seeds, the new seeds are up there in the canopy." Bet Nehemia, central Israel - 5 February 2013 23. Wide of JNF Seed Centre 24. Close up pine cones, pull out to forest LEADIN Professional tree climbers in Israel are being used to access the very best seeds from forest trees. It's because the good cones that contain the premium seeds can only be accessed high up in the tree canopies. STORYLINE In Israel they believe the best way to ensure better and stronger forests is by having teams of tree climbers extract seeds from fruits found only on the canopies of the most resilient, durable trees. They use these seeds to grow the next generation of forests. Trees stabilise land and protect others plant species. Less tree cover leads to faster soil erosion and a loss of plant and animals which rely on trees for shade and food. It's a steep decline into environmental degradation. Agronomist Aviv Eisenband says they are working against the clock to plant more better forests. To get better forests they need the very best seeds from carefully selected trees.
