The 1964 census was a battle over power, representation, and the future of Nigeria’s fragile democracy. In this recollection, Professor Lekan Oyedeji takes us back to a moment when students decided that silence was no longer an option. As Student Union President of the University of Ibadan, Oyedeji led a historic student march to Government House in Lagos, protesting what students believed was the manipulation of national census figures by the government of Tafawa Balewa. The census, in the eyes of the students, threatened to distort political balance and undermine trust in the young Nigerian state. Lekan Oyedeji earned his BA in History from the University of Ibadan in 1963/64. He later obtained an MBA (1970) and PhD (1972) from New York University. He taught in the United States at the United International School in New York, Hunter College, and Brooklyn College. On returning to Nigeria in 1974, he joined the University of Lagos, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Adult Psychology and served as Dean of the Faculty of Education between 1987 and 1991.
