In this episode I finish building the mast step, prepare to install the lower mast bearing, and build the mast tube. The tube got a section of extra 1708 in the area where it will intersect the deck, a 2nd layer of 1708 over the entire tube, then a final layer of 6oz cloth on top. If I did it again, I would instead wrap the tube in a spiral from bottom to top. I think this would be easier to apply and to keep it tight. It was a bitch to put it on the way I did. I ended up with wrinkles and a couple voids I had to repair. I also would apply mold release to the plastic. I thought it would slide off from just the plastic, but it stuck to the plastic just enough that the plastic bunched up when trying to remove the cardboard tube, causing the cardboard tube to get stuck in the cured fiberglass tube. I drilled holes for the screws that secure the mast bearing to the mast step. I drilled these holes in the plywood double the thickness of the screws, then filled with thickened epoxy. After curing I drilled holes in the thickened epoxy just the right size for the screws. This is called “drill fill drill.” It ensures the screws do not bite into the wood which would allow water to enter the wood and rot it. 💵 Donations to help build the boat: 🟠 Patreon: / oceancapablesmallsailboat 🅿️ Paypal: https://paypal.me/perryOCSS 🛒 Amazon Wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls... 👍 Facebook group: / 581818059568072 📷 Instagram: / oceancapablesmallsailboat 📧E-mail: [email protected] Opening music produced by Yosef Flumeri.
